Your own render farm

Monday, August 15th, 2005

Extreme tech has an article talking about building your own render farm. So, you want to rival ILM or WETA? With off the shelf (even used hardware) it’s possible to do amazing things graphically. They discuss several things linux related as the way to go. Also ghost4linux *(g4l) is mentioned.    Send article as PDF […]

A tun of trouble….

Monday, August 15th, 2005

Sorry, VERY bad pun but I couldn’t resist. I mentioned that I was having tun difficulties that kept me from playing around with anything fancy networking-wise with qemu. For starters let me see if I can explain what tun is. Tun is a method of creating a point-to-point “imaginary” network connection between a program and […]

StarOffice 8 delayed

Monday, August 15th, 2005

The upcoming release of StarOffice8 will be delayed until September 12. One possible reason for the delay is extra time to ensure compatibility with the OpenDocument format which will also be in OpenOffice. (Sun’s StarOffice provides the base code for the OpenOffice project.)    Send article as PDF

Sunbeltblog has another entry in the continuing story. Really, there is not much new here, but iDefense has analyzed the code of the trojan that was discovered and have stated that it is not related to CoolWebSearch. (Which is what sunbeltblog has been saying for some time.) They initially said it was discovered during a […]

Okay – this one is definitely strange…

Monday, August 15th, 2005

From the strange category…. The register is running a story about scientists that have developed a battery running on human urine (when you think about how batteries are made this does make some sense.)    Send article as PDF

Computers without hard drives….

Monday, August 15th, 2005

Flexbeta has a story basically about knoppix and how a computer even without a hard drive can still be useful. Knoppix, of course, is a linux live cd that boots into a full desktop operating system. It has many uses, but flexbeta focuses in on some of the basics: web browsing, checking web based email, […]

Zotob.b may be affecting some XP SP2/2003 installs

Monday, August 15th, 2005

As I noted yesterday, virii typically get updated and improved. Yesterdays reports about the zotob virus noted that Windows Xp service pack 2 and Windows 2003 were not affected by the new worm. Today however, the sans institute is reporting that zotob may be affecting some XP sp2 and 2003 installs. It appears that it […]

Monday, August 15th, 2005

I mentioned Qemu a short while back. I’ve used it in the past for testing linux livecds. After doing the writeup though I was encouraged to look at it again and see if/how much it’s improved since I last got an update. Wow….    Send article as PDF
