Server sales numbers linux/windows

On the back of new server sales numbers, cooltechzone has been declaring the demise of linux. I remember looking at the stats and numbers when they came out and didn’t see anything terribly surprising. (Windows server sales outpace Unix server sales), Unix server sales are not equal to linux server sales and have been declining for years, Windows AND linux server sales have been growing. Newsforge has an article on the numbers and get’s into the details.

Among the points they make are that the linux server sales are growing at a greater rate than the Microsoft server sales. Of course, the OTHER thing that isn’t accounted for in these figures are the preinstalled/aftermarket install factor. How many server are shipped with no OS, or with a basic Windows install to be cleaned out and replaced with a linux/bsd alternative? I think market numbers like this can be painted any way you like, but the truth is there are a lot of factors in linux adoption that can’t be quantified well with sales stats. (How many older machines are recomissioned as a linux server?)
