AMD comes out on top in Dual Core CPU showdown

ZDnet has a showdown between AMD and Intel dual core processors. It looks as though AMD has won in every comparison. This is not the only good news for AMD lately as summarized here. Intel’s overwhelming dominance is not what it used to be.

The first thing that comes to my mind on reading that is to check AMD’s stock quote… some years back I started doing online investing with buyandhold.com at the time I had just built an AMD based system and the Athlon processor was all the rage for being faster than an Intel CPU. I bought some AMD stock with this logic… I buy the product, use it, like it, recommend it, think it’s better than the competition AND they’re the underdog. Not bad. You don’t see a lot of gain betting on someone with 90% of the market. Anyway…. that disclaimer of stock ownership aside….

They compared the CPU’s in several categories – Day to Day computing, Gaming, Multitasking, Photo editing, MP3 encoding, video encoding, and price vs. performance. The cheapest processor in the results is an Intel, but here’s what they say…

The best bang for the buck in our minds is the $507 AMD Athlon 64 XS 4400+, which beat the $530 Intel Pentium D 840 on five of our six tests.

I’ve thought about a 64 bit system and dual core seemed the way to go. Good to see that AMD is still holding it’s own in the CPU wars.
