Bittorrent is amazing
As I type this, I’m downloading a compressed hard drive image from the freeoszoo download page. The download size is about 1.2GB and it’s been BLAZING fast. (286KBps is the top I’ve seen) it’s been going – maybe 20-30 minutes and is 70% through…
Really, bittorrent is an amazing concept for the delivery of huge files. I know I’ve heard complaints from some when trying to use it. The fact is your experience depends on the popularity of what you’re trying to download. If only one person has the file, then you’re not likely to see any great performance (especially if two people are downloading.)
It’s become a fairly common method of distributing linux livecd’s and install discs. This hard drive image is another example (it’s another linux image for qemu). My only complaint is that heavy a data transfer through bittorrent seems to make the pc a bit sluggish (maybe it’s the python frontend(?))
