Yahoo is offering RSS reading through email folders, in part countering moves by Google with their Reader web-based RSS aggregator. Apparently, posts show up looking like mail messages and can be forwarded or read in a way similar to the way mail is dealt with. They’ve also launched a beta of Yahoo Alerts which can send a text message, email or messenger alert when a feed updates.
An exploit for last weeks zero-day (0-day) javascript vulnerability in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is in the wild. I saw this post from Sunbelt a couple nights ago go up and disappear, at the time I didn’t have long enough to read it… It’s back today and there are instructions for mitigating the risk. However, there is still no patch from Microsoft and no word on when to expect one. According to the Sunbelt post the exploit in the wild is being used for browser hijacking/spyware install stuff.
A new phishing scheme is promising tax refunds in the amoutn of over $500 to recipients of the scam. Sophos has an advisory. It looks pretty devious – asking people to type in the link address (or copy and paste) and using URL redirect to make it use an official site to then redirect to the phony site.
13 Seperate vulnerabilities are addressed by the latest Apple security updates. 9 vulnerabilites exist in network facing services like the web server, a couple in the web browser, another couple in SSL (secure socket layer) handling. In other words, get updating.
As a couple earlier posts showed having a log file of what happens when Microsoft Outlook checks mail can be essential to figuring out why something is not happening that should (or why something is happening that shouldn’t.) Anyway, to turn on logging.
Incidents.org has the story on Sun’s release of new versions of the Java Runtime Environment and the Java SDK to fix some remote security vulnerabilities.
These security vulnerabilities could allow malicious, untrusted code to compromise a user’s computer. Sun recommends that users update to the newest version of the SDK and JRE available at http://java.sun.com .

Okay, so I revisit to install Microsoft Office 2003 SP2 and hope that solves it. Somewhere along this time, I had also found a suggestion of removing the entire mail PROFILE and creating a new one. *(The theory being that previous account information may still be in a profile in spite of the mail account being deleted.) Again two or three days go by and just when you thought it was fixed, duplicates AGAIN…. This time I had log information though, finally a second piece of log information to work with.
This will likely be a multi-part story because it turns out the solution was one of the more obscure things I think I’ve run into AND I thought it was worth “dumping” everything I found out in the process here for my own reference and anyone else wandering through. I have a customer that uses Microsoft Outlook 2003 and has selected to “leave messages on server”, then delete them when they’re deleted from the recycle bin. This normally works well, although I do recall one (or two) instances in the past when he got duplicates.
Betanews is reporting that Microsoft has a competitor to Google Base in the works already, fremont.live.com is currently restricted to MS employees but a broader beta is claimed to be coming later this month (ummm… since this is the next to last day of November, I’ll assume they mean later NEXT month, unless tomorrow is the plan..) Anyway, they likely see the potential of such a development as Google base to draw and drive traffic.
Yesterday there were articles and blog posts comparing the next generation of the big three browsers, Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera. Among the insightful comments on one of those articles, there was the observation that Firefox’s market share of (up to) 15% (more on tech oriented sites), gave webmasters a reason to abandon a one-browser design strategy. In fact, one reason I think all browsers should be standards compliant is to make web designer’s jobs simpler. What’s interesting though is the further point that Mobile web browsing in some parts of the world exceed PC web browsing and there is wide open competition there for browser market share.
