I’ll go ahead and warn you this is a very non-technical oriented post – just some musings about science fiction – life, health and a few other things including this site and my computer work.

The Doctor Who series is premiering the finale of The End of Time tonight and I’m greatly anticipating that although it’s the end of David Tennant’s run as the Doctor. I’ll be sorry to see him go, but I think I can say that about most of the Doctor’s I’ve seen portrayed over the years with maybe one exception. Anyway in the lead up to this finale there have been hints that “your song is ending” which in many ways resonated with me as well. In many ways I feel as though the way I’m doing what I do is going to be changing dramatically……

GreatDefender is a rogue antivirus application from the winisoft family. It is installed onto a system through the use of trojans and other malware which should give you an indication that it is not something that you want on your system. (It’s usually a bad sign when you don’t know where a piece of software came from.) Once on your system it will run at boot and complain about security problems that it has found on your computer. SystemCleanerPro is a rogue antivirus application. It is a part of the WinSpywareProtect family and will run at system startup. It will popup many warnings about your computers security (or lack thereof). It will scan your system and claim there are viruses and it will repeatedly nag you about purchasing their software. APCProtect is the latest rogue antivirus product in the wini family of rogue security sotware. It is generally pushed through sites that claim in order to view a video you need to install a video codec update or flash player update. This “update” is actually the loader for apcprotect. Once it is installed on your system you will find that it will nag you with many popup warnings about your system security. Anti-Virus Elite is a rogue antivirus application. These rogue antivirus applications pose as a legitimate security application, but in reality is a scam to try to trick you out of money. They will find and claim that there are multiple security problems with your computer. They will claim that you have many viruses. Most of these claims are overblown and false. As you may know we had a good size snow storm here in the mountains of western North Carolina. It’s not unusual, but we will many times go a few years between these big storms. This one brought a tree down on the phone line just before it branches to our house and one other. I called Verizon the first night (Saturday) and got a (!$!$!$!) robot attendant that told me many outages were reported in our area and it should be fixed by Monday at 9 something AM. Not wanting to waste the time then with holding for a person I resolved to call a second line. At this point I could see the line hanging to the ground from the pole and knew they were not aware of it though. I called from a cell phone (of course…)

ProtectPCs is a rogue antivirus application from the Wini family of rogues. It will push itself through claims of it being a video codec update or flash player update. Usually these appear on a site that shows up in the search results for whatever latest greatest sought after video clip may be making the top search traffic. Once installed on your system this rogue will pop up many complaints about your system security (or lack thereof) and will claim that many of the files on your computer are infected with viruses.
